Hook & Attention

Silvia BosoiuFounder, Adverdly

The first 1-2 seconds of an ad creative, where the viewer decides whether to keep watching or scroll past. Strong hooks combine a pattern interrupt with an audience signal so the right person stops and the wrong person scrolls on.

What is the hook in an ad creative?

The hook is whatever happens in the first 1 to 2 seconds of an ad. On Meta and TikTok that means the opening frame of a video, the headline of a static, or the first slide of a carousel. A working hook does two things at once: it pattern-interrupts the feed and signals who the ad is for, so the right viewer stops and the wrong one scrolls on.

How is hook quality scored on a 0 to 10 scale?

A score of 8 or above is a clear pattern interrupt with an obvious audience signal in the first frame. 6 to 7 is a recognizable hook that lacks audience specificity or visual contrast. 4 to 5 is a generic opener (product shot, lifestyle stock photo) that competes against everything else in the feed. Below 4 is a creative that has no scroll-stop mechanism at all.

What is the difference between a hook and a headline?

A headline is text. A hook is the entire first-second experience: visual, motion, audio, and text combined. A great headline can fail as a hook if the visual underneath it looks like every other lifestyle shot in the feed. A great hook can carry a weak headline because the visual interrupt does the work.

How do I improve a low hook score?

Add visual contrast: bright color against muted feed, unexpected angle, motion in the first frame. Move the audience signal up: name the persona or problem in frame one rather than frame three. Cut the first second entirely and start on frame two if the original opener is slow.

Scores high

A bold, unexpected visual that immediately communicates who this ad is for. The viewer knows within one glance whether this is relevant.

Scores low

A stock-photo aesthetic that dissolves into the feed. No contrast, no specificity, no reason for a thumb to stop.

How to improve hook & attention

  • 01Move the strongest audience signal into the first frame (face, problem, persona name).
  • 02Cut anything that takes longer than 1.5 seconds to reveal what the ad is about.
  • 03Use one bold color or unexpected angle to break the feed's lifestyle aesthetic.
  • 04Test a question or specific number in the opening text overlay.
